Fábrica das Palavras is a cultural and leisure center of reference for the entire municipality of Vila Franca de Xira. It is intended to promote education, literacy and the full enjoyment of the most diverse forms of artistic expression.
Designed by the architect Miguel Arruda, the building is a unique and beautiful piece of contemporary architecture that has already won international awards, including the Iconic Awards – Architecture Winner, in 2016. Its privileged location on the riverfront promotes a continuous connection with the Cidade, the Tagus and the Lezíria Vila Franquense.
The equipment is part of the Municipal Library, which has reading spaces for adults and young people, a baby library, in addition to the services of reading periodicals, consultation and home loan of books and audiovisual supports.
In the multipurpose room, gallery and other multipurpose spaces, a comprehensive cultural program is developed, designed for different audiences, from the school population to the general public.
Fábrica das Palavras was inaugurated on September 20, 2014, having been built in the same place where the Descasque do Arroz Factory once stood.
