The Roman Theater of Olisipo, built on the southern slope of the Castle hill and renovated in the time of Nero (57 AD), is the first testimony of theatrical activity in Lisbon, serving as a pretext to talk about theater in Classical Antiquity. Much later, Gil Vicente will stage, in the Paço Real da Alcáçova, the Auto da Visitação (better known as “Monólogo do Vaqueiro”) to commemorate the birth of the future D. João III, in 1502. The Paço da Alcáçova, place of birth of kings and children, it was also the place of the beginnings of modern dramaturgy in Portugal, where Gil Vicente performed his first four plays – in addition to the aforementioned Auto da Visitação, the Auto Pastoril Castelhano, the Auto dos Reis Magos and the Auto dos dos Reis Four Times.
