Moor Mother
A cursed spokesperson for a self-denying America, Camae Ayewa is the vital black prophet of our times. The long and persistent social struggle, the collective paranoia and the search for ascension and conscience are recurring themes of an already extensive musical body. Combat poetry, lava-shaped words and creative freedom. Describing Moor Mother is an exercise that is performed and re-done in the present tense. When we think we know it, behold, another spirit is reborn, another force that puts us in an exciting challenge.
Black Encyclopedia of the Air is his seventh sound installation – and perhaps one of the most iconic to date. Deeply intoxicated with hip-hop and improvised jazz, among other haunted cityscapes, the journey is real. A mystical odyssey through the dying but believing reality, whom she called to herself collaborators such as Pink Siifu, Yatta or Brother May. The micro cosmos created by the Moor Mother is as emotional as it is quantum physics; a collection of sci-fi images and poems, rescued from a distant memory, and created on the asphalt of the streets. Her Irreversible Entanglements can also be heard trepidations, but the language here is more comprehensive, even bringing approximations to RnB. Camae has already joked that this is perhaps his most accessible album ever. Accessible or not, it certainly sets fire to any expectations, making her an artist who savors every moment of her performance on planet Earth.
The narrative written and imagined by Camae is a mirror of a civilization. It condenses within itself the fears, desires and concerns of a “here and now” that is sometimes too indecipherable. Seeing her again in the Aquarius room will be a healing and equally inspiring reunion. Anyone who has seen her in the past knows that her concerts are unrepeatable moments – and in some ways, key events. “The revolution will not be televised”, said Gil-Scott Heron half a decade ago. Is well. AT
