Margem is inspired by the 1937 novel by Jorge Amado, “Capitães de Areia”, which portrays a group of abandoned children and adolescents who live on the streets of São Salvador da Bahia, stealing to eat, and sleeping in a warehouse – a warehouse where, like a kind of family, they protect each other and survive one day at a time. 80 years after the book was published, we wanted to question who the new sand captains are, inspired by the social reality of these children, and aware that there are not always happy endings. Who are these people who are put on the sidelines, and when does this marginalization begin? In the starting house of life, do we all have the same chances or do some start to fight already in deficit? Are there ways to break this? Which are? Seriously? Sure? Is the new world that we have managed to build with all our ideals of equality for all really admirable? In an idea of documentary theater, and in collaboration with Joana Craveiro, this project is based on work with young people who were deprived of education, food, affection, a father, a mother, young people who committed crimes, young people who left in deficit or who find themselves in deficit for reasons that are often unrelated to them. Young people and children who, nevertheless, continue to fight for their freedom, and, in some cases, to invert the game board – the one where, side by side, in the starting square, we were already different from each other, like a fatality .
