EVENT: Lisbon’s 2500 Steps Circuit
DATE OF ACHIEVEMENT: MARCH 6, 2022
DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT:
In this event, we will take the morning for a walk that will take us through several staircases totaling 2500 steps at the end, in a true roller coaster exercise, which will take us through places of undeniable interest such as viewpoints, squares, alleys, patios, some of them real treasures sometimes hidden. We will naturally take the opportunity for short visits and some cultural notes about some of these passing places, along more than 7 kms. Come from there and get to know a lot more about the city of Lisbon.
Casa dos Bicos
The history of Casa dos Bicos begins in 1523, at the behest of Brás de Albuquerque, the natural son of the second governor of Portuguese India, Afonso de Albuquerque. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance and the palaces he found in Bologna at the time, he had a palace built to his liking. But the symmetry in the distribution of doors and windows was forgotten. So the end result is a house that looks like a portal to an enchanted realm.
Church of San Roque
in the century In the 16th century, the place where the Church is located was isolated, outside the city walls, and therefore it was chosen to make the cemetery where the victims of the plague were buried. In 1506, a chapel dedicated to São Roque, the patron saint of pests, was built here. The Brotherhood of São Roque is then established, with its own statutes and supported by the royal house, the nobility and the people. In 1553, the Society of Jesus took over the site and ordered the construction of the temple we see today, with the obligation to keep the Capela de São Roque inside.
Torel Garden
The name has its origin in a family, probably of Dutch origin, who inhabited the place. In 1886, Manuel de Castro Guimarães ordered the construction of a mansion with a garden on the hillside, designed by José Luís Monteiro. The mansion was sold to the State in 1927, to house the Criminal Investigation Police, and the garden was given to the Lisbon City Council in exchange for the construction of an extension of the mansion for use by that police.
