Born in Figueras, Catalonia, Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, Marquis of Dalí de Púbol, was the greatest exponent of Surrealism. He liked to say about himself, “The only difference between a madman and me is that I’m not mad.” In August 1929, he meets Elena Diákonova (Gala), through the hand of René Magritte and Luis Buñuel. From this meeting, a polyhedral bond was born, which would precipitate Gala’s divorce that same year, both of whom were married in Paris in 1932. Deeply cultured, Gala became not only Dalí’s muse but also his wife. its dealer, adviser, and administrator. The connection between the two was so profound that, in 1950, the painter stated “Signing my works as Gala-Dalí, I do nothing more than name an existential truth, because it would not exist without my twin Gala”.
In this important partnership between the Little Opera Festival in Zamora and Temporada Darcos, we find Nuno Côrte-Real, perhaps the most prolific Portuguese composer in the field of opera. After A Montanha and O Rapaz de Bronze (2007), Banksters (2011), The Dietary Dilemmas of a Middle Matryoska (2016) and Canção do Bandido (2018), comes La vida secreta, premiered in Leiria, in October 2021. The libretto, by Martha Alonso, is based on the diary that Gala wrote throughout her life, only discovered in 2011, in the castle of Púbol (offered by Dalí in 1969), and published under the title La vida Secreta. As the composer tells us, “this pocket opera (…) serves as a starting point for a transposition of the universe of his work to the present day, where the digitization of relationships has taken challenging and absurd proportions. Gala as the woman who didn’t watch the #MeToo movement, but… what if she had participated, would there have been Dalí? Would the giraffes continue their exotic long-legged walk?”
